GGD Makes Community Debut While Honoring Servicemembers
The Greater Godfrey Democrats were honored to take part in Alton, Illinois’ 158th annual Memorial Day Parade on May 26, 2025—a cherished tradition that brings together families, veterans, and community members to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service to our nation.
Our float, made possible through the generosity of the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR), who graciously loaned us their trailer, proudly carried banners and symbols reflecting our commitment to democratic values and the voices of the middle and working classes. Volunteers walked alongside the float, greeting parade-goers and handing out flags, creating a vibrant display of civic pride.
For the Greater Godfrey Democrats, this parade was more than just a debut—it was an opportunity to remind residents that there are still people in their community who stand firmly for democracy, fairness, and representation of everyday working families. Against the backdrop of solemn remembrance, the event also served as a powerful statement: while the current Republican administration continues to undermine freedoms and dishonor the sacrifices of those who fought to preserve them, we remain steadfast in our resolve.
We were reminded of the timeless words of Thomas Jefferson:
“When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.”
This quote resonated deeply as we marched, underscoring the responsibility of citizens to speak out and defend the principles upon which our nation was built.
